KiwiSaver: What You Need to Know About Retirement Planning (2026)

The financial journey towards retirement is a complex and often daunting path, especially for those who may not have access to the right guidance. In New Zealand, the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) has raised concerns about the support available to Kiwis reaching the age of 65, a critical juncture where financial decisions can significantly impact one's retirement.

Navigating the KiwiSaver Transition

As Kiwis approach retirement, they face a critical decision: what to do with their hard-earned KiwiSaver funds. This transition, as Romil Ghelani, Head of Financial Advice at FMA, puts it, is one of the "hardest financial transitions" in a person's life. The challenge lies in the lack of readily available professional advice tailored to the unique needs of retirees. While some financial products exist to assist, they are not as prevalent as they could be, leaving a gap in the support system.

Ghelani suggests that the KiwiSaver system itself could do more to bridge this gap. With various stakeholders involved, including KiwiSaver providers, fund managers, and financial advisers, there's an opportunity to provide a more comprehensive support network. However, the current focus seems to be on higher-net-worth individuals who can afford personalized wealth management services, leaving a significant portion of the population without adequate guidance.

The Response from KiwiSaver Providers

Some of the major KiwiSaver providers are taking steps to address this issue. ANZ Investments, for instance, proactively reaches out to its members a year before they can access their funds, offering reminders and free financial advice tailored to individual circumstances. ASB also contacts its members before they turn 65, providing guidance and tools to understand the impact of different retirement decisions on their long-term financial position.

Milford Asset Management goes a step further, offering free access to financial advisers and digital tools to help clients visualize different withdrawal scenarios. Additionally, they provide additional support through their wealth management team for clients who meet certain criteria.

The Need for Personalized Guidance

What makes this particularly fascinating is the personalized nature of financial advice. Every individual's retirement journey is unique, influenced by factors such as risk appetite, life stage, and personal goals. As Sian August from ANZ Investments notes, "there isn't a blanket rule" for managing retirement funds. This highlights the importance of tailored advice, which can help retirees make informed decisions about their financial future.

In my opinion, the efforts by these providers to reach out and offer guidance are a step in the right direction. However, there's still a long way to go in ensuring that all Kiwis, regardless of their financial status, have access to the support they need to navigate this critical life transition. It's a complex issue, but one that deserves our attention and action.
