Nathan River Resources, an iron ore miner, has entered administration, owing over $300 million in debt, unpaid wages, and royalties. This is a significant blow to the industry's reputation as a safe investment opportunity, according to Electrical Trades Union NT organiser David Hayes. The company owns the Roper Bar mine, located 600 kilometres south-east of Darwin in the Northern Territory, and work at the site stopped in April when the company stood down its staff. Five companies within the NRR group have been placed under external administration, with BRI Ferrier appointed as administrators in late May. The group of companies owe vast sums of money to employees, contractors, government agencies, partner companies, and traditional owners, including over $2 million to the Northern Land Council and more than $6 million in unpaid royalties to the NT government. Unpaid wages and entitlements amount to over $968,000 for at least 38 staff members. This situation has raised concerns among workers and contractors, with some individuals owed tens of thousands of dollars, including superannuation and wages. The episode has also sparked discussions about the NT government's 'fit and proper person' test, with employees and contractors questioning the effectiveness of these checks and balances. The NT government's role in issuing licenses and its response to the company's collapse have been called into question. This incident highlights the importance of financial security and proper oversight in the mining industry to attract investment and maintain a positive reputation.
